They weren't that great an idea to begin with because because people often skipped even fastening the lap belt - meaning in an accident the "automatic" portion of the belt couldn't protect the occupant anyway. Q. I have a 1989 Ford Thunderbird with an automatic shoulder mechanism. This mechanism is stuck in the forward position which of course is the worst position as I cannot wear it. This morning I received a citation for it. I would like to learn the basic steps to repair this or at least get it to the rear position which would allow me to use it in a manual fashion.
