An automatic transmission (often informally shortened to auto, and abbreviated to AT) is a motor vehicle transmission that can automatically change gear ratios as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. Similar but larger devices are also used for heavy-duty commercial and industrial vehicles and equipment. Most automatic transmissions have a defined set of gear ranges, often with a parking pawl feature that locks the output shaft of the transmission. Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), which are very different to conventional automatic transmissions, can change their 'ratios' over a wider 'stepless' range, rather than between a set of fixed gear ratios. CVTs have been used for decades in two-wheeled scooters, but have only seen use in a few automobile models. Recently, however, CVT technology has gained greater acceptance among manufacturers and customers, especially in Audi and Nissan automobiles, and gas-electric hybrid vehicles. Some machines with limited speed ranges or fixed engine speeds, such as some forklift trucks and lawn mowers, only use a torque converter to provide a variable gearing of the engine to the wheels. Q. I have a z24 2.8L V6 with a great rebuild performance engine and now I want a good, affordable, and reliable automatic transmission. I am thinking about the level 10 a/t but I am not sure? What do you guys think? Asked by SALSHK - Mon Apr 20 02:05:42 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Level 10 doesn't specialize in domestic transmissions, so your job would probably be custom and therefore not exactly affordable. All you can do is get in touch with them and see what they say. Answered by Loki - Mon Apr 20 10:56:19 2009 Why does automatic transmission idles higher in neutral?
Q. I don't know a whole lot about cars and stuff, but thought it was weird that my car (automatic transmission) idles higher in neutral than it does in drive. My friends car does this too. Is this normal for automatics? And why does it do that? Asked by ep3willister - Sun May 4 03:01:48 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is perfectly normal. When a car with an automatic transmission is idling in drive, the engine has to work against the torque converter, which is trying to move the car forward. In neutral, the torque converter is not engaged, so the engine revs higher. With a stick shift, the torque converter does not even exist.
