small claims court california - automobile accident?
Q. Back in December a lady sidewiped my car while changing lanes. My left front bumper was torn off, dent above left front tire, and broken left front headlamp housing. Her damaged was from the middle of the right rear door all the way to her rear bumper. There is also a dent on her rear right above tire. Insurance says because no witness and no police report, they have to go with her story that I changed lanes into her. Her insurance verbally told me if I want to collect on damages I would have to take her to small claims court. Any feedback and/or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A. Normally you can sue for up to $5000 in small claims and as an individual up to $7500. Did you not collect from your company? By the way, you can sue her insurance company, as they represent you. That might make them settle. You should talk to your company too.

Why do people eat meat and say they love animals and the environment?
Q. I often see people eating a hamburger in their SUV which is adorned with Sierra Club and SPCA bumper stickers. We no longer need meat as a source of protein and most people are fully aware that animal abuse in factory farms is very common. Foods like hamburgers and hot dogs promote diabetes and obesity and are terrible for our health in general. I equate putting pepperoni on a pizza to killing an animal for fun and for taste. We also know that it takes 15lbs of grain to make 1lb of beef so we cannot use the excuse that plants also have feelings as a vegetarian diet is even less harmful for plants in general. We now know that raising cattle is terrible for the environment and is on par with automobiles as a source of pollution. So why do… [cont.]

Spring constants?
Q. An automobile having a mass of 1000 kg is driven into a brick wall in a safety test. The bumper behaves like a spring of constant 5.85 x10^6 N/m and is compressed 2.59 cm as the car is brought to rest. What was the speed of the car before impact, assuming that no energy is lost in the collision with the wall? You're so rude, I only asked this one question out of the 20 problems that I had to do tonight.

A. First we'll find out how much energy was in the spring in the end and use that to find out how much energy was in the car before the collision. We'll use that to find out the initial velocity. The energy in a spring is given by the formula: Energy = (.5)kx^2 Where k is the spring constant and x is the distance it is compressed. Your energy is: Energy = (.5)(5.85 x 10^6 N/m)(.0259 m)^2 Energy = 1965 J This was the initial kinetic energy of the car, the equation for kinetic energy is: Energy = (.5)(mass)(velocity)^2 1965 J = (.5)(1000 kg)(velocity)^2 3.93 m^2/s^2 = (velocity)^2 1.98 m/s = velocity. This is about 4.4 miles per hour, which I believe is below normal safety test parameters. I think they start at about 10.
