Retailing consists of the sale of goods or merchandise from a fixed location, such as a department store, boutique or kiosk, or by mail, in small or individual lots for direct consumption by the purchaser. Retailing may include subordinated services, such as delivery. Purchasers may be individuals or businesses. In commerce, a "retailer" buys goods or products in large quantities from manufacturers or importers, either directly or through a wholesaler, and then sells smaller quantities to the end-user. Retail establishments are often called shops or stores. Retailers are at the end of the supply chain. Manufacturing marketers see the process of retailing as a necessary part of their overall distribution strategy. The term "retailer" is also applied where a service provider services the needs of a large number of individuals, such as a public utility, like electric power.

Shops may be on residential streets, shopping streets with few or no houses or in a shopping mall. Shopping streets may be for pedestrians only. Sometimes a shopping street has a partial or full roof to protect customers from precipitation. Online retailing, a type of electronic commerce used for business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions and mail order, are forms of non-shop retailing.

Shopping generally refers to the act of buying products. Sometimes this is done to obtain necessities such as food and clothing; sometimes it is done as a recreational activity. Recreational shopping often involves window shopping (just looking, not buying) and browsing and does not always result in a purchase.

What do manufacturers and retailers do with excess inventory when a technological product becomes obsolete?
Q. I'm just curious, such as when Apple introduced the Ipod Nano, what happened to all the Ipod Minis that were on sale at the time? Does a manufacturer usually try to clear the product before introducing a better model? What do retailers do with their excess stock when they are told not to sell them anymore?

A. A lot of manufactures do production 'End Of Life' timed so that inventory is depleted or very low when the replacement product is introduced. That way not a lot of goods are left to ship back. Sales staff in the retail stores will flog the old models off before the new models are introduced, or at a discount after the new models hit the streets. Items that are shipped back can be treated a number of different ways. Goods may be sold to eBay brokers, kept as warranty replacements, dumped onto discount chain stores or other world markets, and I've heard of manufactures who truck the goods to a landfill and bury them. Each manufacture has its own policy. I've personally seen video from one of our suppliers who drove over the goods with… [cont.]

Will retailers redeem other retailers gift cards or in store credit?
Q. I have an in store credit that I recently received from Best Buy, but they do not seem to have what I want. I've heard in the past that sometimes retailers will accept or redeem gift cards from other retailers. Would there be a way to do that with this card?

A. Only if the other store is running a special. But in this economy, you can always ask. It also depends on how much off you are talking. But as this is not a discount available to everyone, I doubt that they would give too large a discount.
