A clutch is a mechanism for transmitting rotation, which can be engaged and disengaged. Clutches are useful in devices that have two rotating shafts. In these devices, one shaft is typically driven by a motor or pulley, and the other shaft drives another device. In a drill, for instance, one shaft is driven by a motor, and the other drives a drill chuck. The clutch connects the two shafts so that they can either be locked together and spin at the same speed (engaged), or be decoupled and spin at different speeds (disengaged). Multiple plate friction clutchThis type of clutch has several driving members interleaved with several driven members. It is used in motorcycles, automatic transmissions and in some diesel locomotives with mechanical transmission. It is also used in some electronically controlled all-wheel drive systems. It is the most common type of clutch on modern types of vehicles. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I learned to engage the clutch whenever I use the brake, including when exiting a freeway. My friend says that I should only engage the clutch after the car has slowed to the point when the clutch needs to be engaged. Which is correct? Is it okay to engage in this early? Asked by craige09 - Sat Jul 14 01:35:09 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. You are engine braking, which is fine as long as you don't ride the clutch by keeping it partially depressed. A lot of folks don't like to engine brake because it can wear clutch parts which cost more than brakes. But I've had plenty of manuals with long-lasting clutches that were engine braked. Good luck. Answered by cateraowners - Sat Jul 14 01:44:34 2007 What does the clutch pushrod on a sportbike push against? Q. My pushrod snapped off when the chain jumped off the sprocket. I slid the new pushrod in, put the sprocket cover back on and tried it out-no dice. Pulling the clutch lever won't disengage the clutch. The actuator if that's what it's called does push on the pushrod when I pull the clutch lever. When I push on the rod by hand it's solid; doesn't seem like it's pushing anything in like it should. Q. Car: 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS I was having electical problems so my brother in law changed out my alternator. My car runs great, but now the clutch is really hard to press down and my steering is really stiff also. Does the fact he was tinkering with my electical system have anything to do with the clutch/steering? I wasn't having any problems with either until after he replaced the alternator. Please help. Asked by keyboy267 - Thu Aug 9 22:18:56 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, that shouldn't have anything with that, I would take it to someone who knows what they are doing.
