Four-wheel drive, 4WD, 4x4 ("four by four"), or AWD ("all wheel drive") is a four-wheeled vehicle with a drivetrain that allows all four wheels to receive torque from the engine simultaneously. While many people associate the term with off-road vehicles and Sport utility vehicles, powering all four wheels provides better control than normal road cars on many surfaces, and is an important part in the sport of rallying. In abbreviations such as 4x4, the first figure is normally taken as the total number of wheels and the second is normally taken as the number of powered wheels (the numbers are actually axle-ends to allow for more than one wheel on each end of an axle). 4x2 means a four-wheel vehicle in which engine power is transmitted to only two axle-ends: the front two in front-wheel drive or the rear two in rear-wheel drive. Sometimes they put a different rear axle in 4x4 trucks than 4x2, sometimes not. As for the weight...Depending on the parts used, it can vary. A transfer case can weigh anywhere from 80lbs (for an NV231 or toyota transfer case) to 180lbs, and a front axle starts, fully loaded, at about 200lbs and can weigh as much as probably 300-350lbs for something really heavy duty like a Dana 60. Then there's all wheel drive (AWD), where all four wheels have power and cannot shift between 4X4 and 4X2 mode. So, to answer the other question, the first number is total # of wheels, and the second is how many wheels have power. Another example is a 6X4 ATV, which has two axles in the back, powering a total of 4 wheels, then two non-powered wheels in the front for steering.
