Chrysler Group, LLC is an American automobile manufacturer headquartered in the Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills, Michigan. Chrysler was first organized as the Chrysler Corporation in 1925. From 1998 to 2007, Chrysler and its subsidiaries were part of the German based DaimlerChrysler AG (now Daimler AG). Prior to 1998, Chrysler Corporation traded under the "C" symbol on the New York Stock Exchange. Under DaimlerChrysler, the company was named "DaimlerChrysler Motors Company LLC", with its U.S. operations generally referred to as the "Chrysler Group". On May 14, 2007, DaimlerChrysler announced the sale of 80.1% of Chrysler Group to American private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, L.P., although Daimler continued to hold a 19.9% stake. This was when the company took on the name, Chrysler LLC.. The deal was finalized on August 3, 2007. On April 27, 2009, Daimler AG signed a binding agreement to give up its 19.9% remaining stake in Chrysler LLC to Cerberus Capital Management and pay as much as $600 million into the automaker's pension fund.

On April 30, 2009 Chrysler LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced a plan for a partnership with Italian automaker Fiat. On June 1, Chrysler LLC stated they were selling some assets and operations to the newly formed company Chrysler Group LLC. Fiat will hold a 20% stake in the new company, with an option to increase this to 35%, and eventually to 51%.

On June 10, 2009, the sale of most of Chrysler assets to "New Chrysler", formally known as Chrysler Group LLC was completed. The federal government financed the deal with US$6.6 billion in financing, paid to the "Old Chrysler", formally called Old Carco LLC. The transfer does not include eight manufacturing locations, nor many parcels of real estate, nor equipment leases. Contracts with 789 U.S. auto dealerships, who are being dropped, were not transferred.

Are the Chrysler workers shooting themselves in the feet by striking?
Q. What's to prevent Chrysler from closing shop and moving that plant to Mexico? Rockin--he he that was classic.

A. It's a matter of taking a stand, even if it's a final stand. The GM/UAW compromise basically guaranteed that the next wave of workers to replace the current GM workforce will get paid half -- literally half -- what union auto workers are currently paid. No one, except public radio, has even mentioned this minor detail of the compromise. Every day, the US comes closer to third world/ service economy status. The people mopping up the gravy are owners, who happen not to feel like sharing their vast profits with Americans. They feel this way because Americans want a living wage. The union position may have its problems. But there's nothing particularly laudable in the owner/outsourcer position, either, imo. The company is bargaining from… [cont.]

How much is the chrysler green sheet discount?
Q. We have friends who work for Chrysler and they offered to help us get a new car through their employee discount program. Is it really a good deal? I know buying brand new is super expensive and I am wondering if we are better off buying something slightly used.

A. I am currently in the process of buying a new car and using the green sheet discount because my grandmother worked for Chrysler. The amount of the discount depends on the vehicle. I bought a dodge stratus in 2004 and saved about $1000 with the discount. I am now buying a Jeep Patriot and will save $1700. If you call or go to a dealership they can tell you how much the discount will be without the number from your friend.

Why do Chrysler cars have such poorly designed brakes?
Q. They've been a car company for a long time, couldn't they at least make a decent braking system? This question goes mostly to the Dodge Trucks, Jeeps and Chrysler Minivans.

A. Read ANY review in any car magazine (CR is not a real car mag) and you will see that Ford always has had braking problems. Always the worst in the pack. I have never had ANY problem with ANY Chrysler's brakes in the many I have owned. They are different than GM, in that with GM you have a hair trigger pedal, and with Chrysler it takes more force (but it's predictable). Ford's brake feel is somewhere in the middle, and the imports don't matter (one crash and they are done, with brakes you would like, or not).
