What happens to the batteries from hybrid vehicles when they "die?"?
Q. I have heard that the batteries in hybrid vehicles last for about 100K miles. I am concerned with how, or what happens to the old batteries. Are they recycled, and how are they recycled. Is it good for the enviornment. Might I, and the enviorment, be better off purchasing a non-hybrid vehicle?

A. Hi, actually, that is one of the enduring myths about hybrids, that the nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery stacks only last about 100,000 because that's how long the hybrid warranties are for. That is equal to saying a standard vehicle will "die" at 5 years or 60,000 miles because that is how long their warranty is good for. First off, if hybrids were dying at 100,000 miles or if the nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery stack were failing right at the end of the 8 year or 100,000 mile warranty, it would be all over the news. And true, full hybrids (not mild hybrids like pickups or SUV's that have no battery capacity and cannot move unless the gas engine is running) actually have less operating cost, less parts, and less moving parts… [cont.]

Would it be a good idea to switch vehicles from running on gasoline to natural gas?
Q. These are the advantages of using natural gas in vehicles. 1. We have plenty of natural gas in this country 2. It is less polluting than oil 3. It is cheaper 4. It costs less to make a vehicle than can run on natural gas than a electric vehicle or hybrid vehicle.

If I register my three vehicles to a business will the insurance be less expensive?
Q. I have 3 vehicles that I would like to register to my business. Each vehicle will have one driver. If I get comparable coverage limits to what I have now, will insurance be any less expensive??

A. It will personally cost you less to insure your autos with your commercial policy, but it won't actually cost less to insure the vehicles. If you use them in your business, and you have personal auto policy coverage on them, you have to pay an extra charge because of business usage. If you have them on a commercial auto policy, the extra expense of business usage is already figured in. You should talk to your insurance agent about how is best for you to do this. In my opinion, if the autos are used primarily for personal use and only occasionally used for business, then it would likely cost less to insure them on a personal auto policy with an endorsement covering them for business use.
